Proposed Topic in the form of an Essential Question:
Can the illegal downloading of music can greatly damage the music industry and your wallet in the long run?
Rationale for Choice
What about this topic appeals to you? Why did you choose it?
Being a musician I know how much time and effort is put into writing and recording a song, but I also know how much that goes unnoticed. Many of us have stolen a song at some point or another and have never given it a second thought, but I have. Say we all illegally download a single song off of the internet through some method; that has to add up. I want to know what the consequences of this mass theft ends up becoming.
What do you already know about this subject?
I know that many musicians (such as Metallica drummer, Lars Ulrich) are very angered by this and want to stop it in any way possible. I also have been not only a culprit, but also a victim of such acts in the past so I know all the tricks that people may maneuver to get through certain "check points".
What are you hoping to learn about the subject?
I am hoping to learn about both sides of the argument: (1) The hardworking musicians that earn a living off the $0.99 per song, and (2) the anxious fans who await their next record.
What are you most interested in regarding the topic?
I am most interested in seeing whether or not people who steal music can be appreciative and respectful of one man's hard work and find an alternative to this theft.
What potential risks or challenges do you foresee for your project?
How will I be able to find a way to complete my community service/field work?
I love this topic, as it is something that you're passionate about and you will be interested as you research. I talked about the community service with you, but if you have other questions let me know.
